Interview about writers’ literary habits:

Começo nossa conversa, pedindo para se apresentar e nos falar quais gêneros literários costuma ler?

We will start our conversation by asking you to introduce yourself and also say what kind of literary genre you like to read?
Eu sou Mark Lawrence. Escrevo livros de fantasia. A primeira das quais, Prince of Thorns, lançado em 2011. Atualmente quase toda a minha leitura é fantasia e eu não leio muitos livros por ano. No passado, quando eu tinha mais tempo livre, também li um pouco de ficção literária e clássicos do século 20.

I’m Mark Lawrence. I write fantasy books. The first of which, Prince of Thorns, came out in 2011.

These days almost all my reading is fantasy and I don’t read many books a year. In the past when I had more spare time I also read a fair bit of literary fiction and 20th century classics.

Você se considera um cientista literário?

Do you consider yourself a literary scientist?
Eu sou provavelmente literário para um cientista. Eu não aplico a ciência na literatura. Meu trabalho diário (que eu deixei este ano) tinha sido como um cientista focado na matemática e algoritmos de processamento de imagem e teoria da decisão, genericamente descrita como Inteligência Artificial, em termos populares. Existe um papel para a imaginação na ciência - mas firmemente restrita.

I’m probably literary for a scientist. I don’t apply science to literature. My day job (which I left this year) has been as a scientist focused on the mathematics and algorithms of image processing and decision theory, broadly described as Artificial Intelligence in popular terms. There is a role for imagination in science – but tightly constrained.

Quando você decidiu escrever um romance de fantasia quais foram as suas motivações?

When do you decided to write a fantasy novel which were your motivations?
Eu realmente não decidi escrever um romance de fantasia. Eu só comecei a escrever e isso é o que se transformou. Minha motivação era o divertimento. Eu gosto de escrever. Eu gosto de compartilhar histórias - naqueles dias era em um grupo de escrita online.

I didn’t really decide to write a fantasy novel. I just started typing and that’s what it turned into. My motivation was fun. I enjoy writing. I like sharing stories – in those days it was on an online writing group.

Você acredita em inspiração? Quais foram suas inspirações para começar a escrever?

Do you believe in inspiration? What were your inspirations to start writing?
Todo mundo tem inspirações. Eles podem ser ou não consciente. Haverá inspiração para o ato de escrever e inspiração para o que você escreve. Eu não sei o que me inspirou a escrever. Eu gostava de escrever para vários jogos quando criança e jovem. Minha imaginação é inquieta. Eu preciso fazer algo criativo para pará-la e retornar para o caminho certo. Eu comecei a escrever poemas. Então histórias curtas. Então histórias longas. A inspiração direta para o meu personagem principal, Jorg, em meu primeiro livro publicado, foi Alex no livro de Anthony Burgess 'de 1962, A Clockwork Orange.

Everyone has inspirations. They may not be conscious ones. There will be inspiration for the act of writing and inspiration for what you write. I don’t know what inspired me to write. I enjoyed writing for various games as a child and young man. My imagination is restless. I need to do something creative to stop it getting up to mischief. I started writing poems. Then short stories. Then long stories. The direct inspiration for my main character, Jorg, in my first published book was Alex in Anthony Burgess’ book of 1962, A Clockwork Orange.

O que significa ser um escritor?

What means to be a writer?
Eu acho que isso significa algo diferente para cada pessoa. Para mim, quem escreve é um escritor. É apenas uma maneira de compartilhar criatividade. Favorecendo  pessoas que têm uma ideia de linguagem.

I guess it means something different to each person. To me a person who writes is a writer. It’s just a way of sharing creativity. One suited to people who have a feel for language.

Que livro está lendo? E qual é o seu livro favorito? 

Which book are you reading now? And what is your favorite book?

Estou lendo Pillars of Ligh de Jane Johnson - um livro que será publicado no início do próximo ano. Tecnicamente é um romance histórico, mas não há muito romance e tem muitas batalhas sangrentas e cercos sombrias.

Excepcionalmente estou lendo dois livros de uma só vez. Eu também estou lendo Dark Moon por David Gemmell. Um romance de fantasia dos anos 80, apesar de ter sido publicada em 1996. É uma boa leitura.

Meu livro favorito é difícil escolher, mas eu tendo a dizer que é Free Fall por William Golding. O autor ganhou o Prêmio Nobel de literatura, o livro aborda ideias que ressoam comigo. Ou fez isso na ultima vez que lia.

I’m reading Pillars of Light by Jane Johnson – a book that will be published early next year. Technically it’s a historical romance, but there’s not much romance and lots of gory battles and grim sieges.

Unusually for me I am reading two books at once. I’m also reading Dark Moon by David Gemmell. A fantasy novel with an 80s feel to it, though it was published in 1996. It’s a good read.

My favorite book is always a hard choice but I tend to say Free Fall by William Golding. The author won the Nobel Prize for literature and the book tackles ideas that resonate with me. Or did when I last read it.

Qual é o melhor momento para ler na sua opinião? E qual é o seu lugar favorito para ler?  What is the best time to read in your opinion? and what is your favorite place to read?
Eu não tenho um momento ou lugar para ler ou escrever. Eu posso fazer isso em qualquer lugar. Em um ônibus, uma sala de espera do hospital, banco de parque, quarto, não me importo.

I don’t have a particular time or place either to read or write. I can do either anywhere. On a bus, a hospital waiting room, park bench, bedroom, don’t care.

Prince of Fools vai ser lançado no Brasil, na editora Darkside Books. Você poderia nos dizer como você se sente em ter o seu trabalho publicado em outros países, especialmente aqui no Brasil?

The book Prince of Fools will be launched in Brazil by Darkside Books publisher. Could you tell us how you feel about having your work published in other countries, especially here?

É algo estranho ter seu trabalho traduzido e vendido em outro país. É a minha história ... mas eu não posso lê-lo. Eu me importo muito sobre a linguagem usada no nível de frase por frase. É uma das coisas que os leitores dizem que eu sou bom. Quanto disso sobrevive quando está sendo traduzido? Eu estou dependente das competências do tradutor e eu não posso dizer se eles têm feito um bom trabalho ou não. Certamente, em alguns países os leitores bilíngues já me disseram que as traduções não são boas.

Acho Darkside deve ter feito um grande trabalho, porque a trilogia dos Espinhos (Broken Empire) revelou-se muito popular no Brasil. Tenho cópias dos livros e fisicamente eles são os exemplos mais bonitos que qualquer editora produziu.

É claro que é uma honra e é emocionante pensar que as pessoas em tantos países estão lendo minhas histórias. Eu fui para o Brasil brevemente (fiquei uma semana no Rio, na década de 90) e nunca esperava ter livros vendidos lá. Os leitores brasileiros são incrivelmente entusiasmados e solidários. Trilogia dos Espinhos é uma história adulta com uma borda literário e temas sofisticados por trás da violência e ação. O fato de ser bem aceito no Brasil diz que os leitores brasileiros são um público moderno e avançado.

It’s a strange thing to have your work translated and sold in another country. It’s my story … but I can’t read it. I care very much about the language on a sentence by sentence level. It’s one of the things readers say I’m good at. How much of that survives when it’s translated? I’m dependent on the skills of the translator and I can’t tell if they have done a good job or not. Certainly in some countries bi-lingual readers have told me the translations are not good.

I think Darkside must have done a great job because the Broken Empire trilogy has proved very popular in Brazil. I have copies of the books and physically they are the nicest examples that any publisher has produced.

It is of course an honour and exciting to think that people in so many countries are reading my stories. I have been to Brazil briefly (a week starting in Rio back in the 90s) and I never expected to have books for sale there. The Brazilian readers are incredibly enthusiastic and supportive. The Broken Empire is an adult story with a literary edge and sophisticated themes behind the gore and action. The fact it has done well in Brazil says that the readership there are a modern and advanced audience.
